The US Treasury Department on Friday announced plans to impose economic sanctions on the Iran-based organization, the 15 Khordad Foundation, following an attack on author Salman Rushdie .
Rushdie was stabbed onstage during a speech event at a literary conference in New York in August . Permanently lost and put on a respirator after the attack.
Rushdie was stabbed 15 times by 24-year-old Hadi Matar.
Rushdie is the noted author of the controversial novel The Satanic Verses, which following its release sparked worldwide outcry and widespread criticism for its portrayal of Islam. In 1993, 40 people were murdered in a Turkish hotel where the writer was translating Rushdie's novels .
In 2012, the 15 Khordad Foundation announced a total bounty of $3.3 million to those who assassinated Rushdie. The foundation was founded in his 1979 and was seen as a subordinate to Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini, who called for Rushdie's execution.
The group has been accused by the U.S. Treasury Department of materially assisting, sponsoring, or providing financial, material, or technical assistance to support terrorist acts.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken condemned the attack on Rushdie as a "blatant attack on free speech and acts of terrorism . "
Brian Nelson, the U.S. Treasury Department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said : "This act of violence being glorified by the Iranian regime is appalling. We are all aware that Salman Rushdie has followed the attack on him." I wish you a speedy recovery and life."
Sanctions deny members or affiliates of the 15 Khordad Foundation access to financial assets held in the United States or travel to the United States.
